The history of Stefan Konduri

Stefan Konduri, was arrested by German forces on November 23rd, 1943 during the winter operation, when the Germans were furious and did not know who to catch first. Stefan was captured along with 50-60 other citizens from the city of Durres, some of whom were war activists of the guerrilla units, others were communists. After capturing them all, they took them to Elbasan, from Elbasan to Bitola and from the latter to Zemun near Belgrade. They held him in Zemun for a month and then brought him to Mauthausen, where the ordeal of suffering and persecution began. Konduri’s number in prison was 100 045 A. His number was printed on this hand, so he had the marks for life. He experienced all the horrors of Mauthausen and confessed that by his own hand many people were brought to the crematorium, some half dead, some already dead.

If you do not follow the order to put others in the oven, you will end up there yourself. Fate wished him to be alive on May 5th, 1945, when the American Liberation Forces entered. He records that the first thing the British soldiers did was to dress them in normal clothes and remove the horrible prison clothing that had become one with their skinny bodies. At the same time, after questioning everyone, they registered them according to the numbers they had. When Stefan returned home, family members feared he would never be normal again, assuming they had done experiments and given him injections for 19 months in the camp. In addition, everyone asked only one question: How is it possible that he escaped, what did he do? However, Stefan resumed his life and was respected by the people of Durrës. He worked as a mechanic at the shipyard where he retired. He passed away on August 22nd, 1972.
